What is Allowed in Southwest Airlines Carry-On Baggage?

When you are traveling with Southwest Airlines and have made all the reservations and bookings that are required for the journey, the next thing that should be concerning you is the baggage. Checked baggage is supposed to be transported, so it may not be that problematic, but when it comes to carry-on luggage, you should be properly informed as it may raise issues at the airport. The airline has allowed some items and imposed restrictions as well for carry-on baggage for safety and other purposes. What is the carry-on allowance with Southwest Airlines?

  • When it comes to the weight limit of the carry-on bag, there are no restrictions on that, but the airline has size limits. 
  • Your carry-on bag should be under under 24” (L) + 16” (W) + 10” (H) dimensions as a bag more than that size will be rejected at the time of check-in. 
  • Bags that do not follow the carry-on restrictions will not fit into the overhead cabin or under the space given in front of the seat. 
  • You are not allowed to bring extra luggage with carry-on bags. 

What is the checked baggage policy of Southwest Airlines?

When you are carrying things that may not be needed on the flight but are mandatory to bring. The checked luggage will be transported by the airline so you can pack all the things that will not be required during the journey.  We have mentioned all the terms and conditions for the luggage below: 

  • The free weight limit for the checked bag is 23 kg, and you cannot bring more than that. 
  • If you are carrying more than this, then you have to pay the baggage fee, which ranges from $100 to $125. 
  • Your checked bag should not be more than 62 inches, including the length + width + height. Bags that are bigger than the given dimension will be rejected at the time of check-in. 
  • The maximum weight for the checked bag is 32 kg, and if you need more than that, you need to inform the airline prior to the scheduled departure. 
  • Make sure that your bags are in good condition; they should not be tied with ropes and wires as they can damage other bags. 

What personal items are allowed with Southwest Airlines carry-on?

When you are traveling with the airline and packing your baggage, you should know that one personal item with the carry-on luggage is allowed. There are some restrictions over this item, and we have listed them below for your convenience:

  • You can bring a purse, backpack, handbag,  binoculars, camera, baby cot, books, walking cane, blanket, kid stroller, etc., as a personal item. 
  • The personal item should be small and easy to handle during the journey. Make sure that it does not trouble you. 
  • You can place these items on your lap or put them in front of the seat space. 
  • You can also bring a violin, guitar, or any other small musical instrument. 

Does Southwest Airlines restrict bringing some items?

  • You are not permitted to bring liquid items to the flight, and if you have any valid reason for this, then you should inform the airline beforehand. 
  • It is not allowed to carry syringes, needles, knives, scissors, and lighters on the flight. If there is any medicinal reason for that, then you should get permission from the airline before the scheduled flight. 
  • You cannot bring any harmful gases to the flight as it can be harmful for the journey.
