Why Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka Was Closed

There have been protesters in Bangladesh since the government made an announcement to reinstate the 30% quota for the children of Freedom Fighters. This erupted anger in students and made them protest against this decision. When the protest started, it was peaceful, but soon, it got violent as the government was not listening and addressing the concerns of students. This impacted the functionality of life over the nation, and there have been interruptions in schools, colleges, medical institutes, and mainly flights. Flights from Air India, Indigo, and Vistara were affected, and there have been cancellations and delays to the scheduled departure.

Even recently, when the matter got heated and the Prime Minister of the country had to resign, the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka was closed for six hours. The airport is a hub for domestic and international flights, but as soon as the protest got violent, the airport authorities decided to shut the airport.

In response to the ongoing protest, the Police released rubber bullets and tear gas on the protesters, which resulted in the death of more than a hundred students and a lot of people injured. At this time, the statement of Sheikh Hasina calling all the protestors terrorists, not students, outraged people, and they demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister.

Since the students had disagreements on the flight, the protest against the government started. They have started "Long March to Dhaka" against the nationwide curfew that was imposed by the government.

Prime Minister Sheik Hasina accused these protestors of sabotage, and the internet facilities were cut off, and the military declared a curfew until further notice in response to the actions they received from the public.

This definitely affected the functionality of airline, and IndiGo Cancel all Flights and other disruptions to the flight services and created inconveniences for passenger.

The resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resulted in the closure of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The sources has exclaimed that the airline has to cancel many flight and reschedule other that were scheduled for the international routes.

When it comes to the domestic flights, most of them were departured before the closure of the airport so the passengers of the domestic flights have not witnessed much inconvenience.

"We have decreased flights due to passenger shortage today, Normally we conduct 13flights in a day. Out flight was not hampered as all were operated before 5:30" said the airline's deputy manager Sakib Hasan Shuva.
